'"Christmas at Uttoxeter: The Guisers Made their Usual Tour"'

 

Every year from 1979 to about 2003, I spent Christmas Eve in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, following the local traditional guisers, or mummers as they made their annual tour of the town's pubs and clubs. I also researched the history of the Guisers, and in 2002 presented a paper at the International Traditional Drama Conference at the University of Sheffield.

 

The paper was published in Folk Drama Studies Today: The International Traditional Drama Conference 2002, edited by Eddie Cass & Peter Millington (Sheffield: Traditional Drama Research Group, 2003).
